Algae are among the oldest living organisms on Earth, predating forests, flowers and even trees. Across coastal and island cultures, algae and sea plants have been revered as sources of protection, nourishment and regeneration. In parts of East Asia and Northern Europe, seaweeds were used both as food and medicine, associated with longevity, flexibility and the ability to thrive in constant movement.
