From Peruvian Fruit to Golden Powder

Sometimes called the “Gold of the Incas”, lucuma is a fruit with a longstanding place in Andean food culture.

Erbology’s powder is made from ripe fruit that is peeled and deseeded before its flesh is gently dried and finely milled. The result is a golden powder with a distinctive sweetness and subtle sweet-potato undertones.

It brings character to food as well as sweetness: try it with cacao for a rounded chocolate flavour, or stir it into plain yoghurt for a mellow, dessert-inspired finish.

Lucuma + Maca: Your Morning Duo

Lucuma’s caramel warmth pairs beautifully with maca’s earthy, nutty flavour. Together, they make an inviting addition to breakfast before a busy day or an exercise session.

For a simple Lucuma–Maca Breakfast Smoothie, blend:

  • 1 teaspoon organic lucuma powder
  • 1 teaspoon organic maca powder
  • 1 banana
  • 200–250 ml milk or a fortified plant-based alternative
  • A handful of oats, according to your appetite
  • Optional: a teaspoon of cacao for a chocolate finish

The banana, oats and milk provide the smoothie’s main nourishment; lucuma and maca add their distinctive flavours. Enjoy it at a time before activity that feels comfortable for your digestion, or as part of breakfast afterwards.

A Little Sweetness, Plenty of Possibilities

Stir lucuma into porridge, whisk it into warm cacao or blend it into yoghurt and smoothies. Its gentle sweetness also works in pancakes, homemade desserts and baking.

One teaspoon provides approximately 0.44 g of fibre and 0.4 g of naturally occurring sugars. Use it for its flavour and versatility as part of a varied diet.

Good to know

Lucuma, often called the “Gold of the Incas”, has been cherished in the Andean region for centuries for one simple reason, it makes “healthy” taste like dessert. Naturally sweet with a caramel, maple-like warmth, it’s become a beloved way to add sweetness to smoothies, cacao, yoghurt, and baking, without leaning on refined sugar.

What makes lucuma especially interesting is that it’s naturally low GI, typically quoted in the 25–45 range. In real life terms, it tends to play nicer with your blood sugar than many sweeteners, so you get sweetness without the dramatic sugar rollercoaster. Pair that with its fibre content and minerals like potassium, iron, zinc, and calcium, and you’ve got a sweetener that actually brings something to the table beyond taste.

Our lucuma powder is made by carefully drying and milling ripe lucuma fruit into a fine, golden powder. The fruit is harvested when fully mature, then deseeded and peeled so only the flavourful flesh remains. That flesh is gently dehydrated using low heat to preserve its aroma and nutritional profile, then finely ground into the smooth powder you know and love.

Key takeaways

  • Naturally sweet, caramel and maple-like flavour, perfect in smoothies, cacao, yoghurt, and baking
  • Low GI sweetener, often quoted around 25–45, for a more balanced sweetness
  • Rich in fibre and minerals, adds more than just “sweet”
  • Clean sourcing matters, Erbology prioritizes organic farming, heavy metal testing, and freshness protection
