Good to know

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a treasured adaptogen in Ayurveda, known as the “queen of herbs” for its ability to support female vitality. Adaptogens are plants that “adapt” to the needs of your body, helping you cope with stress, bringing energy when you feel sluggish, or calm when life feels overwhelming.

Traditionally used as a nourishing tonic for women, shatavari is valued for its gentle phytoestrogens, plant compounds that can interact with oestrogen receptors in the body. While their effect is far milder than the body’s own oestrogen, they may help balance hormonal fluctuations, supporting reproductive health, bone density, and cardiovascular function. This makes shatavari particularly supportive during menstruation, fertility journeys, and menopause. Nursing mothers have also used it to help increase milk supply.

Men, too, can benefit from shatavari’s adaptogenic properties, using it to support stress management, immunity, and overall vitality. Rich in antioxidants, shatavari also helps protect skin from free radical damage, supports a youthful glow, and may ease inflammation and redness. By addressing hormone balance at the root, it can also contribute to clearer, healthier skin.

Shatavari is often enjoyed as a warming tonic. In Ayurveda, the classic “Shatavari Milk” is made by stirring ½ to 1 teaspoon of the powder into warm milk, with honey and a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon for a calming, restorative drink that supports balance and wellbeing. It can be taken in the morning for digestive and energising benefits, or in the evening to promote relaxation and rest.
